Echad Project

Statement of Belief

In Psalm 133, David proclaims, "How pleasant and good it is when brothers dwell together in unity ...". Our Messiah came in part to clarify many of the things that were taught in Scriptures. This particular Psalm was clearly very important to Him. In John 17:21, Messiah prayed that we would all be one even as He and the Father are One. According to the Gospel of John, this is one of the last prayers that Messiah prayed for us before He went to the ultimate Sacrifice, that of punishment and death, that He made for us.

When we look at one of the earliest communities of believers, the multitude who came to belief and dwelled together in Jerusalem shortly after Messiah's Resurrection and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we find a very large group of people who literally lived together in a community and who, according to Acts 4:32, ".. were of one heart and one soul ...". Because of the example of this early community, we know that it is indeed possible to achieve living echad.

Over the last 2000 years, as the Gospel has gone out to the nations, we believe a spirit of divisiveness has grown within the Body, and it has corrupted our ability to live in the Way that Messiah intended for us. Today, very few communities of believers actually "dwell together" and truly live "of one heart and one soul" as did that early multitude. We understand that many good works are needed before the spirit of divisiveness that is present in the Body today is overcome. We, at the Echad Project, are working hard so that good fruits can be harvested, and we can once again return to the Way of living echad.

It is important to note that we are not advocating one world-wide church. We are also not associated with any particular denomination or previously existing organized group of believers. We are in fact a team of very diverse believers who have combined experience in many different organized bodies of believers. We fully understand that our Heavenly Father loves diversity. We also understand that different congregations fulfill different purposes within the Body and therefore will function and even look somewhat different from each other. What we do advocate is an understanding that differences should lead to a healthy functioning whole Body rather than to the kinds of competitiveness, jealousy, and even self-righteousness that drive brothers and sisters apart instead of bringing them together.

If we look at our physical bodies as the example, we can see that different parts of the physical body perform very different tasks; they look very different from other parts; and each has a very specific purpose. Never-the-less all parts are clearly a part of a single unified body. Just so, different congregations and even different denominations need to come back into understanding that they are parts of one Body, and that we are all brothers and sisters in Messiah. We fully believe that the time has come to overcome divisiveness and to work diligently toward Messiah's desire for us ... that we should become unified into one even as He and the Father are One. It is our honor and our joy that our Heavenly Father allows us to serve Him in this way. It is our deepest hope that He will bless all who work together and who participate in this effort to restore us to a full state of echad.
